Asus Ul30a

Anyone know anything about this notebook? Looks a lot like the U20A, only brushed silver and 13.3" instead of 12.1". Also a lot cheaper, despite other identical specs.

Reply 1 : Asus Ul30a

We were just getting into a discussion about the UL30A in this other thread:

Reply 2 : Asus Ul30a

I'm definitely interested but can't get it here in Canada yet. Importing from the States from one of the dealers here is an idea but shipping and duty fees scare me.

Reply 3 : Asus Ul30a

You should get an individual in the US to resell it to you. If you get it sent from a person vs. company you prob won't have to pay as many taxes. I've sent laptops abroad before and nobody's had to pay taxes yet.

I'm not sure what I think about the body color but I'm liking the UL30A more and more. I'm not finding one with the new CPUs yet though. The only one I find is with the old SU3500. Hope we see the refresh soon.

I might contact Eddie from BTOTech to see how he can help me

The black UL30A-A1 looks sweet though I think from what I see...

The black A1 looks peeerfect. Definitely going to pick that one up now. Maybe I'll post a review when I get it.

Crysis 2 Advanced Graphics Options

Instructions

1. Once you have unziped place anywhere you want.

2. Delete any autoexec.cfg files found in the Crysis 2 root folder. (if you're asking what that is, don't worry about it)

3. Delete any target commands you may have put on the shortcut as they will override the autoexec.cfg that is created

4. Run the Crysis2AdvancedGraphicsOptions.exe

5. Hit apply once all settings are set

*note* You do not have to start this program every time you want to play Crysis 2.

This will work with any shortcut you make with Crysis 2. All this program does is create the autoexec.cfg

that Crysis 2 will use on startup.

The link to the configuration utility is as follows:

The game runs awesome as is. I played at 1080p, 700/1000 in advanced and looks terrific. Sadly, 750/1050 render me a couple of GSOD with newer 11.4 RC2. But a stock clocks the game runs perfect. I'll try the config tweak program to remove the excess of AA used in the game, which in the demo allow me to gain some fps for better performance.

@fugitiv3 there are not a autoexec.cfg in the root folder, you must create it manually or using this program.

Reply 4 : Crysis 2 Advanced Graphics Options

thx for the Nekki but in what folder do i need to create the file? or it doesnt matter?

I run the game at 800/1100 CC11.2 with hardcore settings and am getting 20-30FPS..the graphics look awesome but I want more FPS to feel the game more smooth... Probably i will disable motion blur lower AA and Anisotropy..

It actually runs that well? When I tried the Demo, it ran horribly on my G73 at which time I was using 11.2's.

@dolsson: at the beginning the demo run choppy, but after the last automatic update, the game started to perform as the final version is currently performing. For full performance I removed the excess of AA which at 1080p is useless (and also the intro).

Installing Windows 7 64 Pro on Sony F series?

Hi

I am considering purchasing a Sony F series laptop but I really don't want the default installation of Windows 7 with all of the bloatware, trialware and Sony media type gadgets that I would probably never use.

I have a genuine copy of Windows 7 64-but Professional from my previous PC which I would like to do a clean install with.

Does anyone know if I am likely to encounter install / driver issues?

Thanks...Brett

Reply 1 : Installing Windows 7 64 Pro on Sony F series?

When you say VAIO F I assume you mean the latest one with 3D functionality. You probably only have to worry about your hardware when you clean-install a 64-bit OS, but since the VAIO F has a quad core SB i7 along with 8GB RAM, it'll definitely manage to handle the 64 bit OS.

Reply 2 : Installing Windows 7 64 Pro on Sony F series?

Thanks for the reply.

It's probably the hardware that I'm the most worried about - I'd be concerned about Windows not finding the right video drivers, SATA drivers, touch pad drivers, webcam, etc. in case they require specific Sony drivers.

Of course the alternative is to stick with the default install and spends a few hours disabing and uninstalling the bloatware.

Reply 3 : Installing Windows 7 64 Pro on Sony F series?

Well if I were you I'd choose the second option to eliminate any uncertainties. The bloatware shouldn't be too hard to uninstall, you'd just have to sit in the control panel and remove them one by one

Reply 4 : Installing Windows 7 64 Pro on Sony F series?

The drivers will be on the Sony website, although you usually have to install them in a particular order.

It will probably take more time than some other makes of laptop but it's not impossible.

I just got an SB with W7 Pro and it didn't have all that much bloatware on it; trials of McAfee AV & Norton backup, Office 2010 starter (I upgraded that anyway as I have a licence key), Evernote and an annoying Vaio dock/bar thing along the top that I've disabled. The rest of it is either diagnostics or hardware control type stuff.

Yeah it's probably the best approach.

I did the same on my gf's Sony Vaio last year and so it's probably the easiet route.

Cheers!

It should. When doing normal stuff like browsing/watching vids, gpu-z reports that my GPU load on my GT 540m is 0%. Which i interpret as meaning my onboard intel HD card has successfully taken over.

Optimus state viewer also shows that my GPU is OFF

Reply 3 : Working GT 540m Driver found

I'm actually taking a performance hit with this driver. Even Oc'd it's less than what it was with the old driver, not sure what's going on there.

My 3dmark score is on par with the old driver. Either Oc'ed or stock clocks. But tbh, its the only driver i've found that'll let games recognise my gt 540m over my intel hd card, this alone for me beats any slight performance decrease (not that i have any).

At stock drivers : 8288

With 267.21: 8280'ish also

I was hoping to not be the first to figure this out. I'll wait for more tests from anyone before I switch.

To anyone using this driver: Would you please post benchmark scores between the two drivers?

Reply 6 : Working GT 540m Driver found

The difference is fairly marginal I guess between the two. I OC'd the chip just a bit more from 760/940 to 780/960 and it's running great now.

I don't think those speeds will do damage and I haven't had any issues so far, I'll do another benchmark before I go to bed for the day on another program (3rd shift worker here), and see what happens with temps. I will use SIW because GPU-z keeps locking up on me.

Reply 7 : Working GT 540m Driver found

If I download the driver from LaptopVideo2go, does that automatically use the modified inf file, or do I have to do something else? I've never used anything from their site.

Reply 8 : Working GT 540m Driver found

I downloaded the inf file separately and then placed it in the driver folder after it extracted and just replaced the old one. That seemed to do it for me.

Thanks, Joe. If/when I get my unit (I ordered on 22 Feb), I'll try this driver.

G73SW-XT1 - Which SSD for boot drive?

Yes you are correct. I advise you that it does not come with a second hard drive cage so you will need to add some cardboard cut outs to support the ssd. reality won't connect to mac

i just got the new reality phone. i cannot get it to connect to my mac for music. usb connect only charges the phone, it doesn't show up on the computer. micro sd card won't read on computer after formatted on phone. bluetooth is recognized but when i go to browse files it says "denied" even though they are public files and both devices are completely discoverable and connected.

i don't want to pay for rhapsody when i already have thousands of songs on my computer.

help please!!!!

Reply 1 : reality won't connect to mac

Not sure what you did/did not do so far, but on the Mac you need to allow the phone to connect via bluetooth through the bluetooth control panel...you should be able to see the phone there, then select/add it ...and IF i remember right, the mac will give you a "pin" number that you need to enter in the phone...on the phone, you'll need to "find" the mac with bluetooth and then enter the for-mentioned pin..then syncing should work for file tranfers...numbers, music etc etc..

Again, IF i remember right (I don't have a cell/smartphone, and have done it twice for friends).

Reply 2 : reality won't connect to mac

i finally got it to connect by the usb by changing a setting on the phone. bluetooth connects, just won't let me access files.

NOW....the phone power charges every time i try to save any changees (ringtone, picture id) and reverts back to default settings. i'm taking it back to the store tonight. had it less than 24 hours and it's been nothing but a headache!

Reply 3 : reality won't connect to mac

Dude! tight! got to convert itunes to mp3, but holds mad tunes! I am super stoked and jamming via phone as I type this. Awesome! exactly what i was searching for!

Reply 4 : reality won't connect to mac

all you have to do if you have a memory card you plug it in to the mac then you put it in to usb mass storage mode (settings/tools/usb mass storage) then when it pops up on the mac as a disk you open it then open the folder my music then just drag all the music you want inside!!

Reply 5 : reality won't connect to mac

Through USB cable I have done it myself

Reply 6 : reality won't connect to mac

because I did what you said and it shows the icons "connecting" and the prompt to "connect to PC" and it did disable calling when plugged in to the usb port. BUT no joy.

Bad performance in AC: Brotherhood?

HI guys,

I just got my steam download of AC Brotherhood. First time I booted it up...performance was CRAP. I mean seriously...terrible. Very laggy...i.e., when maxed out...with AA 4x. IIRC there is one mention in the 11.4 preview drivers thread about this..but I got it fixed.

Here's how... Uninstall 11.4 that were modded desktop drivers. Note...when I uninstalled the previously used 11.2, I used driver cleaner and even my CC showed driver version 11.4.

So similar to that, I uninstalled 11.4 and everything it came with and went back to 11.2. WOW!! Everything is back to buttery smooth. Just how well AC2 ran and looks a lot better.

Hope this helps.

cheers,

V

Concerns on axles able to move in and out

My car has been vibrating for months now and i have checked all tie rods and wheel bearings and nothing seemed to be wrong with that. When it vibrate i did have it balanced again and it wasn't that.

It would now vibrate at certain times and disappear and then reappear.

I went in and check on my axles...you know how where the axle plugs into the transmission...well before that the axles plug into this big round steel thingy and that thing will be plug into the tranny. Well however, both sides are able to move left and right from the tranny hole when i wiggle it or so. You can kinda pull it out like at least 1/4 of an inch or so. Is it suppose to be like that?i thought it was suppose to be stiff in and that you can't pull it out or in.

I ain't no real mechanic brainer so i am just explaining my best.

Reply 1 : Concerns on axles able to move in and out

The yoke that installs in the transaxle should not have any play, neither should the other end that installs in the hub. The "big round steel thingy" is the CV joint. There are obviously 2 of them on each CV shaft. They both need to move in and out (changing the length of the CV shaft) to allow for suspension movement. There shouldn't be any other play anywhere on the CV shafts.

LED buttons and power indicator dead on LN46A950

Hello!

I've had my LN46A950 TV for about a year now, and I love it. The other day I noticed that the red power LED on the lower right of the front bezel was staying on even when the TV was on...it used to only stay on when the set was turned off. I also noticed that the LED backlights behind the touch-sensitive "buttons" on the front bezel had stopped working. The buttons still work, and the set even beeps when you press them, but the backlights don't turn on so it's extremely difficult to see what you're pressing even in daylight.

I tried un-plugging the set for a few hours. When I plugged it back in the red power LED doesn't work anymore either! Looks like all of the lights in the bezel have stopped working.

Anyone seen this before? Is there a fix? There's an 18-month warranty on the set, so it should be covered by Samsung, but if there's a fix out there I'd rather just deal with it myself.

Reply 1 : LED buttons and power indicator dead on LN46A950

dex1701,

I haven't seen this before, but not to say that indicates anything other than personal observation.

I'd really recommend thatif your set is still under warranty, have a technician come out an inspect the unit. You can also call 800-SAMSUNG or fill out the online service request form here:

http://www.samsung.com/us/support/online/supportOnlineServiceRequest.do

--HDTech

Reply 2 : LED buttons and power indicator dead on LN46A950

Ok, so the issue with the button panel went away on its own, so I never called anyone about it. Now the issue has returned. The buttons all work fine, but the illumination of the buttons is now erratic. Sometimes the red light will be on when the TV is on (it's only supposed to be on when the set is off)...sometimes it never comes on at all...sometimes it stays on all-the-time. Same story with the function buttons on the bezel. Sometimes one or two will illuminate and stay on while the others stay off. Sometimes one to three of them will stay on all the time even when the set it turned off.

It's like they just have a mind of their own now. I've tried un-plugging the set for several hours and it doesn't help. Is there any way to somehow reset the internal software in the TV? I'm no longer under warranty...is there anyone I could contact for help at all at this point without dropping hundreds of dollars on a visit by a tech?

Thanks!

What's the difference with R2170M3 vs older BIOSs?

Hi everyone,

I am running the original JP release of the Z BIOS, R3030C3 from 2010/08/26. What, if any, are the changes in R2170M3 and so on? Should I upgrade?

Thanks,

-pN

Reply 1 : What's the difference with R2170M3 vs older BIOSs?

Newer Z BIOS emulators allow you to switch on VT (for running VMware and similar) in the advanced menu. They also work with WIndows 7 for switching graphics back and forth, which the older BIOS versions don't.

They also have disabled EFI boot, meaning you can't boot from an EFI thumbdrive, or partition your hard drive to GPT and boot from it. It also makes it far more difficult to enable the full Advanced menu.

Oh, and RAM support has changed. One model (Z13? Can't remember) allegedly only works with 8 GB RAM if you run an older BIOS version, but for most of them, there will be no change.

ASUS K50ID & Windows 7 = Random freezes

Hello.

I have a problem with my ASUS K50ID notebook with Windows 7 Professional x64 installed. The thing is that sometimes (no pattern, completely random) the system freezes and HDD led lights on, but there's no sound like when disk is working . After 10 seconds everything is back ok.

Looks like it's Windows 7 related - I haven't experienced such behavior on other OS, like XP or FreeBSD. Reinstalled "7" multiple times, tried 32-bit edition too, and still nothing.

CPU and GPU aren't overheating, and the HDD is fine - recently I replaced it with brand new Hitachi Deskstar 7k500, but freezing still occurs.

Does anybody know what is going on?

Best regards.

Overheating - Lenovo 3000 N200

Hello! My Lenovo 3000 N200 is constantly overheating and rebooting. Is there a way to fix this? Maybe if I clean the dust that got in? How can I do this? Or do I have to take it to the repair service? Thanx!

Reply 1 : Overheating - Lenovo 3000 N200

If it's the same as my N100, it's very easy. just remove the panel beside the vents (LHS facing the screen) and pull out the wodge of dust.

That's what I do and for a few months I'm always surprised how cold it is on my knee, and think it must be broken.

You can find manuals on the Lenovo.com site. Look for Lenovo N200 in the index, not Lenovo 3000.

Reply 2 : Overheating - Lenovo 3000 N200

I think it's similar to your N100. Which panel do you mean (and what is LHS)? Do I have to unscrew it? Thank you.

Reply 3 : Overheating - Lenovo 3000 N200

In addition, wouldn't hurt to clean it from dust and maybe repaste the CPU if you feel confident about it.

Wireless Router Issues: Skype Works but not the internet

We just switched from Charter Internet to Bellsouth DSL. We have a Motorola modem from them and our own Linksys Wireless N router. We used this with Charter and we had our PC and laptop. The cable goes from the modem to the wireless router and runs to the PC and transmits to the laptop. This worked fine before but since the switch to DSL we cannot get internet access on the PC or the laptop. If I plug the cable directly into the laptop or the PC, then I can get internet. Here's the funky thing...if I have the wireless network set up I can get Skype still. I've read already online why, but have not had any answers on how to solve this problem.

So I've had this laptop for about a year now, everything has always ran smooth without a problem, it's handled almost every game for me but...

Now whenever I try to play a game on it such as GTA IV, the GPU overheats up to 109C* CPU hovers around 92C*

I'm playing with everything at the absolute lowest settings and I still get these results. When I first bought this laptop, I played GTA IV on it and I never had these problems, even with everything at high.

What should I try doing?

Sounds like a straight up lie, but I am gonna leave that one alone lol.

After about 1.5 years on myne it was time for a serious cleaning. I blew into the vent and got a nice 5C drop from the vents not being entirely clogged. Probably another good 10C drop after actually pulling the cooler out cleaning it and the fan out and repasting. Note that I had pasted the laptop after the original cpu upgrade.

If the GPU is hitting over 105C it should be downclocking and the game should run like crap. GTA4 is CPU intensive so the GPU temps tend to not vary with settings.

As always a good can of air. You can blow out the heatsink a bit with only the bottom off but a good clean will require pulling the heatpipe assembly so you can clean the housing and fan correctly. Pulling the assembly also requires repasting, which can be of great benefit if you choose not to be scared of it, no reason to be either.

Only other thought is you didn't say whether the fan is spinning up like it should.

T410 vs T410s?

Hi all, would appreciate some advice on this question.

95% of the time, my laptop will be sitting on a coffee table next to a power outlet. So portability and battery life are not factors for me.

Assume all attributes are the same (processor, resolution, etc). And disregard price as a factor.

Knowing all this, is there any logical reason to choose the T410 over the T410s?

Reply 1 : T410 vs T410s?

No.

In fact, the slender T410s will look beautiful on that coffee table.

(If and when you wish to replace the main drive, just keep in mind that it is of 1.8" form factor.)

Reply 2 : T410 vs T410s?

Go for Slender T410s.

Reply 3 : T410 vs T410s?

T410s will be lighter and slimmer than T410, I would pretty much appreciate T410s over T410 in this respect.

However, battery life on T410s is below any acceptable limits to me, it has only one battery available and I dont consider additional ultrabay battery to be note worthy or serious addition, its just a laugh, not a real battery for frequent use IMO since it degrades very quickly as reported by users(talking here about additional ultrabay battery and not the main one). I wish Lenovo made slice battery for T410s just like they made one for T410. Still dont get it why its so hard to make unified slice for 14" ThinkPads, both regular and slim series. If Lenovo did this, I would definitely consider S series as my main laptop.

So, aside from weak battery T410s would be my logical choice.

If on the other hand you dont care about weight and need more battery life, then T410 wins hands down.

Reply 4 : T410 vs T410s?

The logical reasons for choosing T410 over T410s are:

1. You can use 2.5 inch hdd.

2. There are 4 usb ports rather 3 on the T410s

3. Easier to source.

4. You can get one with smartcard, which i don't think you need.

Other than i can't really think of any reason why you should get a T410 over the T410s.

Reply 5 : T410 vs T410s?

Given what you wrote I'd be asking whether there's any reason to get a T410s over a T410. Functionally, no. If you want the prettier notebook go for the T410s, it looks great.

Reply 6 : T410 vs T410s?

If you do intend on getting a T410s, make sure you look up the "vertical band" issue just so you know what you're in for. I own a T410s right now and there's a vertical strip on the screen that doesn't work -- I need to send it in to Lenovo to fix. It's a widespread issue.

IIRC, from what I've read on the Lenovo forums, that was sorted out a long time ago and the faulty panels were removed from manufacturing several months back. Newly-produced units shouldn't be subject to that problem.

Reply 8 : T410 vs T410s?

The vertical band issue only affected early models of the t410s.

Does anyone know where I can go to get my wiselink firmware updates? I have not updated it since I bought it.

Cf 51: are LCD displays interchangeable ?

Will an LCD display from one Cf 51 model fit any other Cf 51, ie, will LCD from a Mk2 1.73 motherboard plug into Mk3 duo motherboard?

Reply 1 : Cf 51: are LCD displays interchangeable ?

The duos use a different cable. You should also verify the same resolution. I am not sure if the UXGA and the XGA use the same connector on the LCD itself or not. I (think) they do(no guarantee). They did on a CF 50 I worked on. Swapped a UXGA LCD for a busted XGA with no problems. The laptop just used the highest common resolution.

The difference in the cable is the single core units have separate connectors on the motherboard for the LCD and for the inverter. The duo core units have 1 connector on the motherboard combining the LCD and the inverter. The lid itself is the same. As matter of fact the lid from a cf 50 will physically bolt on. With some minor creative wiring I could put the lid assembly and LCD from a CF50 on a single core CF51.

One day if I run out of projects, I am going to take a single core or a CF50 LCD/lid assembly and wire a duo core connector on it. I have the parts here, I am just busy right now.

One seller on fleabay has a duo core cable for sale for 25.00 or something like that. Last time I searched anyway.

Vostro 1320: Random reboots and freezes

I'm currently having odd freeze/reboot issues with my Dell Vostro 1320. I will get the sound of connecting and disconnecting a USB device repeatedly and rapidly, followed by a freeze. I also get random reboots.

I've done a clean reformat and installation/update of Windows XP. I've also run CHKDSK and memtest86+ and found nothing. That pretty much is the limit of my knowledge as far as cheap/easy things to do.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues?

Thanks!

Did you try running Dell Diagnostics?

XPS 14 has shortest life in dell's laptop history?

the resell value is pretty bad because dell discotinued it.............

I am upset why discontinued it so early, I'd sell it earlier.

XPS14 only last less than 4 months, then got killed...............

Reply 1 : XPS 14 has shortest life in dell's laptop history?

Why'd being discontinued affect its resell value?

Reply 2 : XPS 14 has shortest life in dell's laptop history?

It might actually help the value -- plenty of people like the smaller laptops for portability. Maybe you'll find the right buyer.

Reply 3 : XPS 14 has shortest life in dell's laptop history?

Hey, if its an i7 with the 14 Inch laptop that would sell well. A lot of laptops don't have that kind of power in the size range and plus like thumper300zx said, a lot of people buy smaller laptops. Just need to find the right person.

Reply 4 : XPS 14 has shortest life in dell's laptop history?

The XPS 14 case is definitely weird. Though Dell made some really dumb choices to begin with (denying it USB 3.0 for example) that may have pushed a lot of potential buyers to go with the XPS 15 instead.

Reply 5 : XPS 14 has shortest life in dell's laptop history?

Their biggest mistake was the POS screen they put on them. I don't think most people really have anything for a USB 3.0 port anyways.

Reply 6 : XPS 14 has shortest life in dell's laptop history?

Thought they were replacing XPS 14 with something else? It could go either way, either a super expensive notebook that was rare or a notebook that barely sells for 1/3 of it's brand new price. Only time will tell.

Reply 7 : XPS 14 has shortest life in dell's laptop history?

The SXPS 13 didn't last that long either, and it wasn't replaced with anything. Maybe the market for small but powerful Dell laptops just isn't there.

Reply 8 : XPS 14 has shortest life in dell's laptop history?

If they had updated the XPS 14 with USB 3.0 and a blu-ray reader (without the expensive writer combo), I totally would've gotten it. It would've been the perfect laptop for me. I was really disappointed when they pulled it

Reply 9 : XPS 14 has shortest life in dell's laptop history?

If they would have updated it with a decent-quality higher-res 1600x900 option like that LG panel everyone's sticking in there, I would add it to my list of recommended general-use / multimedia / light-gaming laptops.

Skype, Z Series, and Windows 7 Service Pack 1

Has anyone else had problems with Skype causing system to hang with W7 after adding SP1? My Skype was working fine before, but now whenever it is launched, the system completely hangs and has to be rebooted. Any ideas what might be going on?

Internet Explorer 9 - Hybrid lappie owners

As the title suggests.

First off. I am not a big fan of the IE software. Personally would prefer Chrome myself due to it feeling a lot more fluid / smoother, but hey, that's my opinion. So when IE9 beta first entered the public release phase, I thought I'd give the IE browser another go, after about 2 years of abandonment.

...Not bad, said I...

Until I tried switching the GPU over with IE9 running (while minimized). BSOD. This was reported here as well, however I was unable to re-find that thread (hence reluctantly starting this here).

Anyways, I assumed the issue was due to the beta stage of the development, so I ditched IE9 and returned to Chrome, at least until the browser got a full, proper release.

Just checked, and the release date is slated for tomorrow, the 14th of March (it's just hit 13th of March where I live).

I own a VGN-Z26, a lappie with hybrid graphics. Curious as to whether any hybrid graphics owners here (preferabbly the VGN-Z and VPC-Z, though other hybrid-using models welcome) are willing to give MS and IE9 another shot, and whether current RC users have had BSOD on their machines, notably when they were switching the GPUs over? Or are most individuals here die-hard Mozilla / Opera / Chrome fans...?

Granted, you technically shouldn't be switching graphics with minimized / running software but hey, Chrome doesn't complain (nor does IE8 for that matter).

Reply 1 : Internet Explorer 9 - Hybrid lappie owners

Chrome and IE8 don't complain when you switch graphics because neither is using the graphics card for hardware acceleration.

I've been testing the IE9 RC and don't get blue screens when I switch graphics. However, it does cause IE to glitch and lock up and I've had to crash out of it.

It would be nice to think that Sony will provide a driver update that offers better compatibility with modern browsers but I doubt that is likely to happen

Reply 2 : Internet Explorer 9 - Hybrid lappie owners

Uhm my guess is that this is an microsoft / windows problem not an nvidia (or whatever) switchable graphics problem. The browser can't handle the sudden change of graphics card.

If you realized from 260.xx nvidia added 1 process, this process is to prevent ie9 to crash.

I am using 263.14 2266 and i don't have this problem.

edit:

but i can tell you that i don't have any acceleration with intel, it is like software simulation for intel hd side.

But if you wanted to try intel hardware acceleration as well, try searching

"Force Enable GPU Hardware Acceleration Graphics Rendering on Old GPU in IE9" at google.

Cheers for the replies guys; greatly appreciated.

I am currently running Sony's GPU drivers, so don't really have that one extra process in the Task Manager. But it is indeed curious; nvidia and/or Microsoft then know about software instability with hybrid machines... That tells me those who ain't confident with drivers not from Sony will be left out in the cold. Unless Sony releases an update (though fat chance of that ever happening...).

As for why I'm using Sony's drivers... I have opted for Nautis's drivers a few times in the past, numerous versions, however had temperature issues. Idles around a good 75-80'C mark in SPEED whereas the stock drivers do so around 60'C in said mode. Though that could be an issue on my part as I haven't clean-installed my OS in over a year. Don't really have the time to re-set everything after clean-installs...

Anyways, indeed. I do remember MS touting hardware acceleration as IE9's stronger points. That would explain it being rather dependent on the nvidia hardware when it starts up. And would explain the crashes when the switch was flicked; the nvidia card is either turned on or off hence the browser falls into a bit of a dilemma...

If you want you can try my hybrid graphic driver, since it is signed you don't need test mode anymore. But i forgot which settings i put for nvidia side, but my intel side is as good as sony one.

The full, final version (9.0.8112.16421 RTM) has been released and I have since installed.

Opinions, though quite mixed... The goods first:

- Smooth. The overall feeling is a lot more fluid, zippier, and less stuttering. Tested on a webpage where the vertical scroll bar quite essentially turns microscopic. Where IE8 failed on EPIC proportions, IE9 mows through such pages without a hitch in performance.

- The font type has been changed. Checking the SETTINGS page my IE9 says KOREAN scripting and has chosen a Korean-named font. My VGN-Z's locale setting is set to Korea in case it's relevent. That said, the majority of sites I view are in English and the font is indeed different. A subtle change, but a welcome one nonetheless. Looks like Calibri but could be Tahoma (or could be text-edge-smoothing, if memory serves correct, called Clear-Text).

- Before I ditched IE8 a few years back, I had the settings set as I see fit. Some settings were NOT migrated, but most were (notably the 'disable-google-analytics' in the EXTENTIONS manager). Yeah yeah, I installed a similar plug-in for Chrome.

- Click-and-snap TABS. It actually resembles and performs like Chrome does. For me considering coming back from Chrome, it's an extra.

- Search via the URL field; ABOUT BLOODY TIME MICROSOFT.........

Negatives:

-Seems the BSOD issue has been addressed / fixed (from SPEED to STAMINA with IE9 running). But switching from STAMINA to SPEED required me to restart the IE to take advantage of the suddenly added 'hardware'; it would continue using the Intel graphics without doing so (ie, no hardware acceleration as mentioned by Andrew08). I guess that's normal so this borders a negative + positive opinion...

- IE9 is EXTREMELY reliant on hardware. I am viewing the fish-tank for the IE9 (on the official page Beauty of the Web). My nVidia 9300GMS peaks at around 93'C in regards to temps, and memory usage is a HUGE 220MB for 300 fish. Not to mention the fan now sounds like a vacuum cleaner in regards to loudness... And everything that is NOT IE9 is rather laggy; it is rather demanding on the hardware as it is touted as I guess. It would not do well multitasking when you're watching a higher-res Youtube video, for example; hardware will take preference for IE9 over whatever else.

- In conjunction with above, RAM usage. It's extremely dynamic and IE9 with the 300 fish consumes a good 200MB. However, with normal / idle browsing it's less at around 60MB (IE8 was around 110MB at idle).

- I thought the new download page was a little too fiddly, with a completely seperate window. I would have preferred it to be a in-the-window TAB like Chrome. But that said, CTRL+J brings up the download window like it does on Chrome, so I most certainly welcome that wee similarity.

With the VGN-Z set to STAMINA, with 300 fish I'm getting 11fps. With SPEED mode I see around 25fps. And with the Intel, since it is the CPU doing the work, the CPU temps peak at around 70'C (CPU0 at 65'C and CPU1 at 75'C). It's lower than the nVidia but with how the BIOS-level thermal strategy is set up on the VGN-Z in regards to fan speeds, the sound difference between the nVidia and Intel graphics is neglible...

Now, the ULTIMATE question. Would I ditch Chrome for this?

My opinion (READ: MY OPINION) - Maybe, inclined towards Chrome. Chrome is alot more fluid than IE9. I just don't know how else to describe it. IE9 feels more like Opera in regards to fluidity, but without the RAM consumage and bloat that Opera has become over the past few years. I've got 8GB of RAM, yes. But I find Chrome better uses that to its full potential (and yes, I only use IE x64 except when I feel like some youtube, since x64 Flash is yet to be released). But IE9 is a huge improvement. For everyday browsing, apart from the slight learning curve of the GUI (or the lack thereof for average-Joe users), it will fit the bill perfect.

Sum-up.

Microsoft has done an excellent job getting IE9 upto where it is today. It is indeed a world of difference compared to IE8. But with the race against the competition, one could say IE9 only allows Microsoft to finally see the leader's tail. Doesn't catch up to them / it, well, at least not yet...

I'm a long time Firefox user and although IE9 loads faster, etc. I MUST have my add-ons in Firefox... which leads me to my next point, if this browser was IE8 or IE7... MS would have crushed chrome and slowed down Firefox's growth... I guess better late than never?

It's in every Windows users interests to upgrade to 9, even if you don't intend on using it! Do you really want IE8 sitting dormant on your machine? *shudders*

As an I.T professional, I use all browsers because I need to. IE9 is very, very nice. It's quite close to Chrome & Firefox 4 (RC) in many areas, but the development of Chrome and Firefox should see those browsers pull away from IE9 (you could argue Chrome was so far ahead of the rest anyway...).
