Concerns on axles able to move in and out

My car has been vibrating for months now and i have checked all tie rods and wheel bearings and nothing seemed to be wrong with that. When it vibrate i did have it balanced again and it wasn't that.

It would now vibrate at certain times and disappear and then reappear.

I went in and check on my axles...you know how where the axle plugs into the transmission...well before that the axles plug into this big round steel thingy and that thing will be plug into the tranny. Well however, both sides are able to move left and right from the tranny hole when i wiggle it or so. You can kinda pull it out like at least 1/4 of an inch or so. Is it suppose to be like that?i thought it was suppose to be stiff in and that you can't pull it out or in.

I ain't no real mechanic brainer so i am just explaining my best.

The yoke that installs in the transaxle should not have any play, neither should the other end that installs in the hub. The "big round steel thingy" is the CV joint. There are obviously 2 of them on each CV shaft. They both need to move in and out (changing the length of the CV shaft) to allow for suspension movement. There shouldn't be any other play anywhere on the CV shafts.
